Summer–when it’s not raining here in South Florida– is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors with your pets. Whether you have a playful pup, a curious cat, or any other furry friend, there are endless ways to keep them entertained and active.  Enjoy these fun and safe activities with your pet!

1. Beach Days

Take advantage of our local dog beaches.  Dogs love playing in the sand and splashing in the waves. Remember to bring fresh water, a shaded area, and plenty of towels. Your cat may love sand, too.  Consider setting up a small sandbox inside at home where they can dig and play.

2. Hiking Adventures

Explore local trails and parks with your dog. Hiking is a great way for both you and your pet to get exercise and enjoy nature. Make sure the trails you choose are pet-friendly, and always keep your dog on a leash. Bring along water and a collapsible bowl, and be mindful of the weather—early morning or late evening hikes are best to avoid the heat.

3. Backyard Fun

Transform your backyard into a pet paradise. Set up a kiddie pool for your dog to cool off in, or create a DIY obstacle course with items you have at home. For cats, consider a safe outdoor enclosure or “catio” where they can enjoy the fresh air and watch birds.

4. Pet-Friendly Picnics

Pack a picnic and head to a local park with your pet. Many parks have designated areas where pets are welcome. Bring along some pet-friendly treats and toys to keep them entertained. Ensure you have plenty of water and a comfortable spot for them to rest in the shade.

5. Outdoor Training

Summer is an excellent time to work on training and socialization. Practice obedience training in your yard or at a quiet park. Teach your pet new tricks or reinforce good behavior. This not only stimulates their mind but also strengthens your bond.

6. Water Sports

Calling all athletes!  If your dog loves water, consider activities like paddleboarding, kayaking, or even swimming. Always use a pet life jacket for safety, and start with short sessions to get them comfortable. Make sure the water is clean and safe for your pet to swim in.

7. Cooling Treats

Help your pet beat the heat with homemade frozen treats. You can make simple ice pops using pet-safe ingredients like chicken broth, peanut butter, and fruits. There are many recipes available online, or you can get creative and come up with your own.  Your cat may love cool treats, too.  Use your imagination to come up with a “cool” cat treat too.

Please Always Remember These Safety Tips for Summer Fun

  • Hydration: Always have fresh water available for your pet, especially during outdoor activities.
  • Shade: Ensure your pet has access to a shaded area to rest and cool down.
  • Paw Protection: Hot pavement can burn your pet’s paws. Walk them during cooler times of the day and consider pet booties for protection.
  • Sun Protection: Pets can get sunburned too. Use pet-safe sunscreen on exposed areas, especially for pets with short or light-colored fur.
  • Parasite Prevention: Summer is peak season for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Keep your pet on preventive medication and check them regularly for parasites.

With a little planning and creativity, you can ensure that both you and your furry friend have a safe, enjoyable, and fun-filled summer season. So, grab your sunscreen and your pet’s favorite toys, and head out for some summer adventures!
